Northampton Saints boss Phil Dowson has given a positive update on the injury to Italian winger Edoardo Todaro, who has now returned to training and is likely to be available for selection in the next few weeks.
Todaro, 20, scored ten tries in 13 games for Saints last season before his campaign was cut short after tearing the cruciate ligament in his right knee while training with the Azzurri ahead of the Six Nations.
And while the weekend trip to Bristol The Bears are probably too early for him, Dowson says he’s not far from playing again and adding to the Saints’ already formidable firepower.
“He joined training today and looks sharp. We want to make sure we can get that transition back from his rehab to full, full contact rugby. So hopefully he’ll be back in the mix in the next couple of weeks.”
“His goalscoring rate has been exceptional, but I think also his ability to beat people. I mean the Bath game down there. His introduction to PREM rugby was phenomenal, and I think people might lose sight of that because it was a long time ago and it was the first half of the season.
“But we’re excited to have him back. It’s hard for a young player to come in and get a long-term injury right away. He dug it.”
“There’s a guy called Henry Lumley, who’s a very talented centre. He’s also played a couple of PREM Rugby Cup games for us, and he’s in the same boat, so they’ve been pushing each other, and he’ll be back around the same time,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dowson said in his weekly media call that outside center Tom Litchfield, who has played since the PREM Final win over Gallagher Exeter Chiefs in June, he is “a couple of weeks” away from playing again after suffering an ankle injury in Sri Lanka.
