Diamond Dallas Page could be a WWE Hall of Famerbut more due to his successful run in WCW, where he was a multiple World Heavyweight Champion, than his tenure in WWE. DDP’s run during the start of the Invasion angle was considered a disappointment by many, including himself. And it didn’t have to be, as DDP revealed during his speech “Wrestling Majors Podcast” that he had aspirations of facing The Rock, not seeing the fact that both called themselves The People’s Champion. Vince McMahon, however, had other ideas.
“When you try to make Vince McMahon feel like you want to be a team player, you’re giving yourself away, you’re giving him yourself, and you’re giving him yourself,” DDP says. “So I let it go. And I let them put me in a corner that was never going to work.”
DDP meant now an infamous angle that saw him make his WWE debut stalking The Undertaker’s wifewhich would lead to a feud between the two that Undertaker would decisively win. The former WCW questioned his motivations for using his character Undertaker to gain popularity, even though DDP is already a household name and has been portrayed as a coward many times. Ultimately, DDP believes the failure of the storyline was the main reason why WCW fans ultimately weren’t interested in sticking around during the Invasion angle.
“I decided to go for it and just play the part,” DDP said. “And man, it just…it upset so many WCW fans and they stopped watching wrestling. They just stopped watching.”
