If you’re wondering how to illustrate the exhilarating highs and devastating lows of life as a professional golfer, look no further than Manuel Elvira and the final half hour of his 2026 BMW PGA Championship.
For context, Elvira played in the final pairing at Wentworth in the flagship event of the DP World Tour calendar – think of it as the Euro Tour’s answer to The Players Championship – and held her own despite a full ranking and a star-studded group that included. Rory McIlroyAdam Scott, JJ Spaun and others.
Then, at Wentworth’s par-5 17th, Elvira hit the shot of her life: A sparkling long iron that followed on the green and set up an eagle attempt. When he hit that putt, he had taken a share of the lead alongside Spaun.
Even better, Spaun was in the clubhouse – while Elvira still had a chance to birdie the par-5 18th and secure the win outright.
Elvira, a 30-year-old Spaniard, was chasing her first DP World Tour title. His brother, veteran DPWT pro Nacho, was out to watch the finish.
He drove off the tee, finding the fairway but leaving just over 250 yards to a green guarded by water. Elvira chose to put it. Then came his biggest mistake: laying straight into a fairway bunker on the left side. Suddenly, instead of a short wedge shot from the fairway, he was left with an awkward approach from the bunker.
Things only got worse from there. Elvira shot her bunker over the green and out of the stands behind the green. He took relief in the nearby drop zone, setting up a challenge to force a playoff — only to hit the one in the bunker next to him. When that bunker shot slipped out of the hole, it was officially over.
Spaun monitored the action from the driving range and then the clubhouse and watched as it went from playoff hopes to outright victory.
Elvira added insult to injury by missing her short bogey putt, a costly error that left her in a four-way tie for second rather than the runner-up alone.
To his credit, he faced questions from the post-round press.
“Devastating that I hit the wrong shot at the right time on the lay up and it left me the hardest shot in the fairway bunker, and I wasn’t able to pull it,” Elvira said.
As the eagle was at 17 – “it felt amazing”, he said – the finish was more and more painful.
However, even in real time he was able to see the positives; the finish was the best of his career.
