AEW’s David Finlay detailed the different things he had to adjust to after making the switch from NJPW.
Finlay joined AEW earlier this year after spending more than a decade in NJPW, where he was twice IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. Despite being an extremely experienced wrestler, Finlay had to adjust to his new environment, particularly the style of wrestling.
“I feel like work-wise, I’m still trying to figure it out because it’s just a completely different style. But the timeline is much better. I went like the short tour would be 10 days which is easy but then we’d have the G1 which is 6 weeks and that’s the G1 it’s the hardest tournament he talks to Chris. The conversation is Jericho“.
Finlay also mentioned that he has had to adjust to how AEW films its television shows compared to NJPW, specifically with the cameras, as well as sticking to the time allotted for each match.
“Yeah, I’m still adjusting (to the cameras). I had a little bit of experience working for companies in the US, like a little bit, so it wasn’t completely foreign to me. But, like, in New Japan, it’s like do the game and they’ll catch you. Also, if you’re attending the main event in New Japan, if you want it to be time, yes. a range, like from here to here, whatever,” he said.
He explained that AEW has tighter time limits for matches and segments, and he believes that working within those limits requires a certain level of skill. However, she said she enjoys working in such an environment where she has to constantly adapt during a meeting. Since debuting in AEW, Finlay has teamed up with former NJPW stars Clark Connors and Gabe Kidd. The trio even won the AEW World Tag Team Championship, though their reign only lasted a few days.
