Cristiano Ronaldo suspended by Portugal after Jorge Jesus fallout as federation opens investigation

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following the opening of disciplinary proceedings following his controversial exit from the national team.

The 41-year-old left the Portugal squad during the recent international break after a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time.

Ronaldo later apologized to his teammates and fans, admitting he was wrong to leave the field and insisting he would accept any punishment imposed by the federation.

However, the FPF have now confirmed that an investigation is underway, with the Portugal captain facing an uncertain international future as the disciplinary process continues.

“Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Unprofessional Section on October 9, 2026,” the federation said in a statement.

The governing body explained that Ronaldo had initially been subject to an automatic provisional suspension before another suspension was imposed.

The case has also been described as “urgent”, although no deadline has been set for a final ruling.

Ronaldo scores the 980th goal of his career in the return of Al-Nassr

Although his international future remains uncertain, Ronaldo has already returned to action for Al-Nassr.

The Portuguese striker scored as Postecoglou’s side cruised to a 3-0 win over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League on Friday.

Ronaldo opened the scoring after Kingsley Coman’s effort from outside the area was saved by goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah.

The 41-year-old reacted quicker to the rebound and finished from close range to record the 980th goal of his career.

The win moved reigning champions Al-Nassr level on points with league leaders Al-Qadsiah after eight matches, although they remain on goal difference.

Postecoglou had previously insisted Ronaldo was in good spirits following his return from international duty and refused to comment on the disagreement with Jesus.

“Ronaldo played with us with full commitment and his morale is very high,” the Australian said earlier this week.

“I am now his coach at Al Nassr, and he is a great addition to our team.

“I don’t like to talk about what happened with his selection.”
