FRISCO, Texas – The news wasn’t all bad regarding the Dallas Cowboys’ injuries in Sunday night’s 28-20 loss to the New York Giants.
Rookie safety Malik Hooker suffered a broken hand and will undergo surgery on Tuesday, but is expected to be out only two weeks.
Starting linebacker DeMarvion Overshawn has struggled with hamstring issues. He is also expected to miss only a week or two.
“We’ll see how he does, but nothing lasts long,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said.
The plan is for PJ Locke to fill in for Hooker at safety. While rookie defensive end Caleb Downs can handle those duties, the Cowboys prefer to keep him as their nickel corner, allowing him to play in a variety of ways toward the line of scrimmage.
Rookie Jaishawn Barham will see increased playing time due to an overshoot injury.
“Jaishawn got significant playing time (Sunday night),” Schottenheimer said. “He did some good things, some things he wants to improve on. Shemar James is a member of our football team, very smart, very bright. Then obviously we’ve got some guys on the practice squad that we’ve got elevation. Curtis Robinson is also a lot of football player. Then he’s a good guy in this Barron League. We have a lot to look forward to.”
