Conor McGregor talks about the disaster that was his UFC 329 main event fight against Max Holloway on one of his YouTube channels. There is a video herebut I will now tell you the most interesting parts of it (and also not the Bible story).
In this video, McGregor talked about the end of the fight, what happened after him blew out his knee on a shaky leaping switch kick and then a buckle and rollback while a confused Holloway wondered aloud what the hell was going on. McGregor seems to think the fight should have gone ahead despite his damaged condition.
“I’m telling you, I didn’t call to stop the fight,” he said. “I didn’t call for a stop. If I’m fighting you and you’re looking for the referee to ‘Ref, stop the fight!’, who’s going to stop the fight? Don’t stop. Stop the damn fight. You’re the guy calling for the fight to be stopped. The fight has only just begun.”
It feels a lot like McGregor trying to save face for what will be one of the most anticlimactic moments in UFC and MMA history. “Everything is fine,” McGregor claimed.
“It’s all good. We’re doing our job. We’re staying the course and we’re going to get our revenge.”
McGregor added that he “longs” for revenge. But he did not say if it had anything to do with Holloway. “I’ve got a job ahead of me,” McGregor continued. “I have the title for the greatest comeback in sports history.”
In that video, McGregor, 38, also said that his disastrous punch was something he hit in training.
“I had a shot,” he said. “I landed it perfectly in training. My sparring partners came forward. It was WA BOOM! And I just put it on my head. I don’t care when the bell rings. Last time I was in that octagon, my leg broke in half. I run forward, charge and fly across the octagon and punch him in the jaw.”
McGregor’s botched comeback will sideline him for at least another year. It could be much longer if the UFC isn’t thrilled with McGregor’s final fight under his contract. (and then go and earn someone else’s money).
However, McGregor obviously wants to get back as soon as possible. And it’s clear why. The UFC has long since moved on from the McGregor era and I think the fan base has too. The best deal for McGregor right now is to double dip in BKFC as a promoter and fighter (with a hand-picked opponent).
