Chelsea vs Manchester United Premier League Preview
Chelsea Head coach Xabi Alonso vowed to focus on Manchester United as soon as the Spaniard leaves Anfield following the Blues’ EFL Cup fourth-round exit at Liverpool on Wednesday.
The visitors drew 1-1 after 90 minutes, only to lose in the third set of sudden-death shots when goalkeeper Mike Penders replaced the injured Emiliano Martinez.
“He looked very solid, with good composure,” Alonso said of Penders. “That’s what it takes in this job to get through tough situations, and he did that pretty well.”
Penders was also in goal in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at home to Tottenham on Saturday, ending their two-match winning streak following wins at Everton and against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
The Cherries cruised to victory a united on Sunday, winning 3-0 in a game that ended with beleaguered Red Devils boss Michael Carrick appearing to wave goodbye to fans who then booed his players as they left the pitch.
United have persisted with Carrick but remain in a precarious position one point above the relegation zone and on an eight-game winless streak in all competitions.
“I didn’t expect anything,” Carrick replied when asked if he had planned to continue in charge against Chelsea.
“I was all about the performance, the result, what it was. It’s no secret that the dynamic and the atmosphere in the stadium was a bit different to normal.
“Going through that and digesting that … it was purely (a case in my) mind of ‘what do we need to do to make things better?’

Chelsea vs Manchester United Prediction
Chelsea
2-0
Manchester United
In United’s dismal form, it’s hard to see Carrick’s side getting a positive result here. Chelsea had been solid at home before this defeat to Spurs, winning four and drawing one of their five such games in all competitions this season.
