Central Notes: Thompson, Joe, Watson, Tyson, Buzelis

Pistons forward Ausar Thompson has been encouraged to shoot mid-range jumpers, and the stats back it up, according to Detroit Free Press’ Omari Sankofa. Among Thompson’s 36 field goal attempts in the Pistons’ first six games, 17 were from close midrange.

“When he gets into his spot, it’s mostly settled because nobody’s going to block him.” coach J. Bickerstaff said. “We need him to be aggressive on offense and make teams defend him. It’s a shot he’s been working on and it’s a shot we need him to make.”

Thompson, who signed a five-year, $155 million contract this summer, is averaging a career-high 55.8 percent from the field, though his scoring average (9.7) is about the same as last season (9.9).

Here’s more from the Central Division:

  • The Pistons on Wednesday against the Sixers, a matchup of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference. Detroit will be without a backup point guard Isaiah Joe for the fifth straight game, The Athletic’s Hunter Patterson tweets. Joe is nursing a contusion in his right hip.
  • The Cavaliers will look to avenge Monday’s five-point loss to Oklahoma City without two of their key wings. Peyton Watson will miss his second straight game on Wednesday with a strained hamstring Jaylon Tyson will be out with a sprained ankle, Locked On Cavs’ Danny Cunning tweets. Cleveland picked up Tyson’s fourth-year option a couple of weeks ago.
  • Matas Bouzelis the beginning is hard for those who struggle Bykovaveraging 13 points per game. He is shooting 40 percent overall and 29 percent from beyond the arc. Bouzelis averaged 16.3 points last season, second in the league. “I worked very hard this summer” he said, trans Joe Cawley of the Chicago Sun Times. “Sometimes you work hard and think you’re going to get results. Now you have to really focus on what you can control and what you can do.” Chicago is carried out his US$7.6 million, the fourth year of Bouzelis’ contract last month.
