19:00: Carter’s move to a two-way contract is official, trans NBA.com Transaction Log.
8:48 am: Former lottery pick Devin Carter converts the Schedule 10 contract into a bilateral transaction Celticsleague sources tell Michael Scott of HoopsHype (Link to Twitter).
Carter, 24, was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2024 draft, but his NBA career has gotten off to a slow start as he spent most of his rookie year recovering from shoulder surgery.
Even after making his Sacramento debut in January 2025, the former Providence guard has struggled to establish himself as a consistent part of the team’s rotation. In 74 games over two seasons with the Kings, Carter averaged 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 14.8 minutes per contest for a staggering .401/.274/.674 slash line.
Eager to bend below the tax line, Sacramento traded Carter a second-round pick to Atlanta in June, then waived him by the Hawks in September, clearing the way for him to sign with Boston.
While Carter’s playing time this preseason has been limited due to illness, he was impressive in his Celtics debut on Oct. 8 against Cleveland, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes of action. Boston outscored the Cavaliers by 22 points during his time on the floor.
The Celtics kept a two-way slot open nearby Amari Williams and Dylan Mitchellso no corresponding roster movement would be required to make room for Carter. His two-way contract will pay him a salary of $678,882 and allow him to play in 50 regular season games.
