Carrick: Man United have moved on from Martinez saga

Michael Carrick insists Manchester United they have moved on from the saga surrounding Lisandro Martínez’s comments following the Champions League defeat to Atlético de Madrid.

Martinez questioned summer transfer business and United manager Jason Wilcox after Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat a Atlético de Madrid.

The Argentina defender later claimed his comments stemmed from “anger and frustration” and, after apologizing, the club fined him.

With Carrick under significant pressure following United’s worst start to a top-flight season since 1986, the episode could hardly have come at a worse time.

United visit Leeds United on Sunday in what is likely to be a very difficult encounter at Elland Road.

But speaking at his pre-match press conference, Carrick was adamant that spirits are high in the United camp.

“It’s really done,” Carrick said when asked about the Martinez saga.

“We’ve moved on from that. It was one of those things. He’s come out and acknowledged the situation and as a group we’ve moved on.

“It’s not really drama for us as a group. The boys have trained really well, there was a really good feeling around training this morning. Really good feeling.

“From the outside (you’re) after a lot of information about big discussions, but it was pretty simple. We all understood the situation and what it meant. He made his statement and he acknowledges that it was a mistake on his part and that was really it.

“We have very good feelings within the group. We have very good feelings within the club from within.

“In terms of results, it hasn’t gone to plan lately, but the spirit, the togetherness, I said it again, but today was one of the best training sessions we’ve had and you can see there’s a real feeling and a feeling within the group that we want to do something about this situation and we want to do something about it quickly.

“We understand the situation that arose after the game, but we believe it has been resolved and we have moved on.

“I moved on and today there is a freshness in the group that I really liked.”

Carrick confirmed Martinez will be in the squad to face Leeds, but Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo remain doubts, while Benjamin Sesko will miss out again.

“We’ll see Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo,” added Carrick. “Ben is still undergoing a couple of checks before we update the timelines.

“We’re trying to get a handle on what it is. It’s still a little further away, but when we know a little more we’ll let you know.”
