Carrick claims Man United sacking is ‘not on radar’: ‘What do you want me to show?’

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick says he is not about to lose his job and the team’s poor form is not a “catastrophe or disaster” or “the end of the world”.

In Carrick’s first full season in charge, united have lost three and won one of their first five domestic games, including a 1-0 defeat at home to 10-man Manchester City on Sunday and a 3-2 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

“We don’t like to lose games,” he said Carrickreacting to what he perceived as a journalist and suggested that he had not been sufficiently moved by the audible displeasure of supporters.

“It’s not that I don’t feel the emotion, but it doesn’t affect what we do next. Do I need to show more emotion? In what way? What do you want me to show?”

United blew a 2-0 lead against Brighton, ending their 145-game unbeaten run at home, including 143 wins, in games in which they had been two goals ahead.

“We live in a world of instant reaction and judgement, which is fine,” said Carrick, who made United the form team of the Premier League after initially being appointed on a temporary basis in January, including qualifying for the Champions League.

“It is what it is, but it’s not in my world. Being realistic and understanding that would come and learning from each other is very important.

“That’s why I’m here. It’s my responsibility, I’m fine with it. It’s not a blame game. We’re always looking for things to look at and find fault; sometimes it becomes too much (a case) of wanting to find fault.

“Blame me. It’s not a problem, but it’s not about blaming people. It’s about finding solutions. It’s all a collective thing. It’s about what you focus on, really.

“I’m totally happy to take the responsibility, there’s no problem. I know where we want to go and we want to get there quickly.”

United are already eight points off the top of the table and three short of the likely Champions League qualification places. “I think it will be a lot longer than one or two results games,” Carrick said of the prospect of losing the support of his bosses.

“Taking all of that away, it’s irrelevant to me. I know the club, I know the role, I know what’s expected here in terms of a certain level.

“In terms of the future and ownership and how much time I have … it’s ridiculous to think like that in the position I’m in. It’s just not on the radar.

“I understand where we need to be and what the owners expect. I understand all that. It’s only two or three games (in which) we haven’t had certain results. We have to do it and we have a lot of games to plan.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s the best place for me. Sometimes when it’s not planned, the best way is to get through it and come out stronger.

“It’s a period of time where small things can become big things for other people. The key for us is to stay focused, stay on track. It can happen, as much as we don’t like it.

“The fact that it happened in the first group of the season … if it happened in November, it might look a little different. But I was expecting a spell that we had to work through.”
