Chicago bones Head coach Ben Johnson believes they potentially dodged a bullet with Caleb Williams’ hamstring injury, which isn’t as bad as first feared.
It looked as if Williams’ season might be in jeopardy when he was carted off with a non-contact injury during the Bears. 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
After coming down screaming in pain, an emotional Williams had a towel draped over his head as he left the Bears’ sideline.
But Williams appears to have avoided the serious injury those scenes suggested, though it appears he will miss Chicago’s Week 3 meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles next Monday.
talking with ESPN 1000 in ChicagoJohnson said: “It looks like it will be a week-to-week deal for him.
“I still have to talk to our manager here, we’ll do it here shortly, and I’ll have his explanation, but it looks like it’s week-to-week, but I’ll probably miss some time.”
Asked if the Bears had dodged a bullet with the 2024 first overall pick’s injury, Johnson said: “Yes, potentially. We’ll see.
“He’s tough and he comes back from this kind of thing better than the average human, so we’ll see.”
Tyson Bagent will start against the Eagles if Williams is ruled out.
Bagent, who signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2023, has not started since his rookie year, when he went 2-2 in four games under center for Chicago.
