The Monday following the first full Sunday of an NFL season is known for wild overreaction.
of Bears exploded For 59 points in a road win over the Carolina Panthers, those 59 points. The fourth-most in a single game in franchise history. Quarterback Caleb Williams was a big part of that effort, completing 21-of-29 passes for 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
And along the way, he gave NFL fans the only soft moment of the weekend.
The play in question came midway through the third quarter, with the game tied at 31. Chicago faced a 1st-10 outside the red zone, at the Carolina 24-yard line.
Williams took the hint that he was standing in the gun and hit wide receiver Luther Barden in the middle of the field for a short gain.
At first blush, that statement might not seem like the “softest” game of the week. But watch what Williams does just seconds before delivering this throw:
that’s right. Midway through the game, Williams took his throwing hand off the football, swept it on his right thigh, then threw the ball back and picked it up.

It was a hot and humid afternoon in Charlotte, with temperatures in the 80s with 50% humidity at the start. So you can understand why Williams wants to dry his hands before making a throw… even if it happens in the middle of a game.
