Caitlin Clark enters FIBA break on a tear: happy, healthy and ready for the world

INDIANAPOLIS — After her team’s final game before the FIBA World Cup break, Caitlin Clark heard a certain four-letter word and blushed.

She is usually not shy. At his most comfortable, Clark ran and conducted the Indiana Fever orchestra on offense, then turned to the sold-out home crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, directing the fans to stand up and scream louder.

But after Friday night’s screams, and in front of a more subdued press environment, she sat and listened as Fever center Makayla “KK” Timpson shared her immediate reaction to Clark’s latest performance: 34 points and 12 assists in a 111-91 win over the Connecticut Sun. It’s the fifth time this season that Clark has reached the 30-10 mark. In league history, all other WNBA players are combined for just four.

“I mean, she’s amazing,” Timpson said. “She’s our GOAT in the league, you know what I’m saying.”

Clark couldn’t hold back his laughter. She covered her face with a towel and then continued to listen to her teammate’s praise with a big smile. These days, the overused G word has lost the meaning it once conveyed. Yet, coming from teammates, it represents the highest form of admiration. So when the embarrassment subsided, Clark acknowledged Timpson’s mood.

“Thanks, KK. I appreciate it,” Clark replied, glancing at the stat sheet and still trying to suppress that smile.

Ahead of the World Cup, Clark is happy and healthy, and her pesky back is no longer behaving as badly as it did at the start of the season. She’s on a roll, easily playing the best basketball of her short pro career and nonchalantly dropping 30-point games alongside backcourt mate Kelsey Mitchell. She competes defensively, rarely treating that end of the floor like 24 seconds of hard work before letting loose again on offense.

Basically, she’s ready for the world.

This version of Clark lives up to the hype. This version also fits into the world of WNBA luminaries on the superstar roster — and belongs in the MVP conversation. It took a while, but Team USA has been waiting for this version.

In 2024 Clark was left off the Olympic team; reasonably disdainful considering she was still a rookie and had never played in a senior level international. The two years since the layoff produced up-and-down results: Clark managed to win Rookie of the Year honors after returning from an Olympic layoff, then a sophomore season that was halted after just 13 games. Now, Clark heads into this tournament at an amazing time in her career – she’s only getting better, and she knows it.

“I mean, I feel really good. I feel probably the best I’ve ever felt in my career, and from a confidence standpoint,” Clark said, when asked about her health. “I think it was a battle the first 20 games for me, to find my confidence again, mostly in my body, and now I feel like I’m just playing. I’m not thinking. I’m just like, ‘Next play, next play, next play.’ That’s when I play my best basketball.”

A fully confident Clark looks composed but displeased. With her ‘next play, next play, next play’ mindset, she pushes the ball after both misses and misses. She pauses only with purposeful switches that she uses to wait on a high screen or to scan the floor and spot a teammate making a cut. Against the Sun, Clark split her 12 assists among four different teammates, while Mitchell finished with 34 points and four assists of her own, giving her a career total of 911 and moving her to second on the Fever’s all-time list. Friday marked the second consecutive game in which both guards scored 30 points, so between Clark and Mitchell, maybe the 2026 MVP award should be a two-woman race held exclusively at Indianapolis.

Back to Clark, with Team USA, she understands that the roster will operate with defined roles. Hers will be an extension of coach Kara Lawson, and she knows she has to play within herself.

“That’s probably what Kara’s looking for, and I think it’s kind of like what she said to me when we played in Puerto Rico. It was like, go out there and do what you do, you know?” Clark said. “That’s the most important thing in USA Basketball. You’re surrounded by so many great players, and at the same time you have to do what you do. But also your goal is to help the team win. It’s not about you. So I think that’s my goal, like being a playmaker, setting everyone else up.”

However, if Clark does go into psycho mode in Berlin, then things should get spicy. Just like they did during a second-quarter stretch Friday night when she elected to play one-on-three against the Suns and still scored at the rim. On the next possession, she grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled in a 3, then followed that up by checking the heat in the arena and pulling up from over 33 feet. Clark missed that deep 3, but said: She feels good.

“It’s funny because you watch her, and I think it’s easy to take some of the things she does for granted,” Fever coach Stephanie White, who will join Clark and Fever All-Star Aliyah Boston in the quick transition from the WNBA schedule to Team USA.

“A lot of times with great players, it’s easy to take it (for granted) and think it’s easy,” White continued, “and when she’s in a flow like this, where she’s able to score, she’s playing at the pace we want her to play, she’s moving the ball, she’s putting it on each other, it’s really, really fun to watch on the sideline and sometimes it’s really fun to watch on the line.”

Soon the eyes of the world will be on Clark. Although it will focus on another four-letter word: gold.
