Sunderland Striker Brian Brobbey has signed a new five-year deal on Wearside, the club announced this afternoon.
Brobbey has enjoyed great success at the Stadium of Light since joining Ajax last summer. The 24-year-old has scored 10 goals in 38 Premier League games for Sunderland, but created many more with his powerful hold-up play.
Sunderland currently prop up the Premier League table and Brobbey’s decision to stay will come as a huge blow ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Dinamo Zagreb and Sunday’s meeting with Chelsea.
The Dutch international told the club’s official website: “I’m very happy with the trust the club has shown in me. Since I arrived, I’ve felt the ambition here, and I want to keep growing and improving as a player.
“To represent Sunderland in the Premier League is both an honor and a privilege. To have played my part in helping this club qualify for European competition is something I am incredibly proud of. It is an achievement that will always be part of the club’s history.”
“I know I can still be a better version of myself, and that’s what motivates me every day. I want to score goals, help the team and give our fans something to be proud of.”
Brobbey a key part of the Sunderland trip: Ghisolfi
Sunderland’s director of football, Florent Ghisolfi, added: “We are delighted that Brian has committed his future to Sunderland. This deal reflects a shared belief in what we can achieve together and a mutual commitment to keep moving forward.
“Brian has great qualities, and we believe he has a lot more left in him. Our responsibility is to support his development and challenge him every day, so he can fulfill his potential and help the team succeed.
“We want to build a team that grows together, with players who embrace the demands of this club and are proud to represent Sunderland. Brian has a big part to play in this journey and we look forward to continuing to work together.”
Brobbey made a name for himself at Ajax with 56 goals and 24 assists in 163 appearances over two spells.
He was named in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup and was an impressive performer in the United States, Canada and Mexico with three goals in three games.
