Before Brentford-Liverpool
Liverpool scored six on Wednesday night at LASK in the Champions League. Now they have to prove they can do it in the Premier League. Andoni Iraola’s side travel to the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday to take on a Brentford side who are still unbeaten and have already beaten Tottenham and Chelsea at home this season.
The win in Linz was exactly what Liverpool needed after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Manchester City. In the 51st minute they were 4-0, with Ronald Araújo and Jeremie Frimpong headed and Bradley Barcola in two goals. Barcola completed his first professional hat-trick and Lewis Koumas grabbed his first Champions League goal on his first outing in the competition, before LASK pulled three goals back late on.
The young players also drew attention. Rio Ngumoha set up Barcola’s first goal with a brilliant slalom run, and Trey Nyoni was composed at the base of midfield.
The Premier League has been much tougher. Liverpool have won just two of their opening six games, are already nine points behind leaders Manchester City and have scored just once in their last three league games. Defeat on Saturday could see them drop into the bottom half.
Brentford are strong at home. The Bees are unbeaten in eight games in all competitions and while they have drawn four of their last five league games, Kristoffer Ajer’s late equalizer at Aston Villa last weekend proved their resilience once again. They have also been more prolific than Liverpool, scoring 12 league goals to Liverpool’s seven.
There is also a familiar face waiting for Liverpool. Caoimhín Kelleher spent years as Alisson’s understudy at Anfield before joining Brentford in 2025, and he will be keen to show his former club what they are missing out on.

Brentford v Liverpool team news
Ryan Gravenberch is suspended following his red card against City, so Liverpool need to find another midfield partner for Alexis Mac Allister.
Iraola said on Thursday it was “too early” to say whether Dominik Szoboszlai (hamstring), Cody Gakpo (ankle) and Alexander Isak (thigh) would be ready, after all three missed the LASK game. “We have to wait and see, I think it’s still very early, but I’ll leave the opportunity open,” he said.
The Liverpool coach also made it clear that he will once again rotate with matches every three days. “We’ll have to change again at the weekend,” he said. “We need everybody. We need everybody at one point or another. Everybody has to be ready because we’re probably going to need them.”
Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley remain out.
For Brentford, Kevin Schade is a doubt after picking up a shoulder injury at Villa Park. It would be a big loss as he is the Bees top scorer with three league goals. Antoni Milambo, Joshua Dasilva and Mikkel Damsgaard are all out, while Jannik Schuster and Nathan Collins are also doubts.
