Barcelona President Joan Laporta wants 2030 World Cup final that will be held at Camp Nou and not in Madrid or Casablanca.
The 2030 tournament will take place in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with matches to commemorate the tournament’s centenary to be held in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
But the venue for the final has yet to be confirmed, with Spain and Morocco in dispute over where it should take place.
Both countries have confirmed they will host the final, with Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu likely to be Spain’s favourite, while the 115,000-seater Grand Hassan II is being built in eastern Casablanca. It will become the largest football stadium in the world.
However, Laporta believes the Camp Nou, which is still being redeveloped, is a better option.
When the works are finished, Barcelona’s iconic stadium will host 105,000 fans, and Laporta will see it as the ideal venue for the final.
“The World Cup final should not be in Casablanca or Madrid, it should be at Spotify’s Camp Nou,” said Laporta. Chain SER.
“I say that for a reason: 105,000 fans.
“I think FIFA will take that into account and besides, we already had a World Cup final at the Santiago Bernabéu in 1982.
“With all due respect to Morocco, the final of the 2030 World Cup should be played in Spain. In addition, Spain is the world champion.”
Laporta added that he will put the idea to world football’s governing body, FIFA.
“The 2030 World Cup final at the Spotify Camp Nou would mean the international recognition we want, and we will propose it,” he explained.
“We will argue these reasons and others that we are sure will come our way.”
