It has now been over a year WWE bought AAAfully dipping their toe into the world of lucha libre, and it seems to have given the promotion enough confidence to explore their own old lucha libre concept. PWInsider Elite: reports that there have been “early pitches” behind the scenes about reviving Sin Cara’s character. While it has yet to be confirmed if WWE will move forward, if they do, the idea would be to give a new performer a gimmick.
Many will remember that the character of Sin Cara was created after luchador Mistico signed with WWE in 2011. The gimmick would eventually feature both Mystico and fellow luchador Hunico, who took over the gimmick after Mystico was sidelined with an injury in mid-2011; Upon returning, the two feuded, culminating in a mask vs. mask match where Mystico defeated Hunico. The latter would later take on the Sin Cara mask again in 2014 following Mystico’s departure and continued to portray Sin Cara. until 2019.
While it was seen as a powerful carrier of goods, The Sin Cara character was largely seen as a failureparticularly Mistico’s incarnation, as the character never made it past the mid-card and became popular with botchers. For years, Mystique’s Sin Cara tenure was considered to significantly hinder his career; He has since seen a career resurgence in CMLL as a top star in the promotion, credited with CMLL’s boom period of the past few years.
Shortly after PWI’s report, False Finish went to X to report that AAA luchador Myzteziz Jr. was being considered for the role, though it’s unclear if WWE is moving forward. The character Myzteziz is also believed to be a clone of Mistico, who was portrayed as Mistico during his stint in AAA in 2014-2015. Some will no doubt assume that AEW’s Dralistico, whose contract is soon to expire and who was seen as expressing displeasure at AEW earlier this weekmay also be a viable candidate.

Opinion: Bringing Sin Cara back is an idea WWE should not explore
Not much in WWE surprises me anymore. This news. I am stunned, confused, stunned; Any other word that describes a mess, you can pretty much pencil in for it. I have no idea what WWE plans to do with the Sin Cara character; maybe they give Dralistico if he jumps from AEW to WWE/AAA, maybe they have a luchador in AAA they want to give to, maybe they’ll do what they do best and put a white guy under the mask and try to convince people it’s a luchador. Regardless, bringing back the character of Sin Cara is still a terrible idea because the character of Sin Cara is seen as a failure. Why is it perceived that way? Because it was a failure.
Now, yes, people’s argument for this will be that it was only a flop because Mistico was busted under the gimmick. He was, but I’d argue that was WWE’s fault, a result of WWE trying to make Mistico into something he wasn’t instead of playing to his strengths, which is why he’s been successful in every other company he’s worked for. Furthermore, if Sin Cara’s failure was simply a Mistico issue, why did Hunico never pull off the stunt? In any case, it does not matter. character failed, and bringing it back a decade later won’t revive it any more than WWE’s return to LWO revived the concept. I should also point out that WWE is doing this comically when they already have Mistico gimmick Myzteziz Jr. and can chase Dralistico, which is a Mistico gimmick himself. I’ve already spent too much time on this, so I’ll say it again. this is a stupid, stupid, bad idea on WWE’s part. If they know what’s good for them, they’ll kill this in the crib right now, before it gets off the field.
