Sterling, who has won his last few bouts, had originally proposed a November meeting with Silva at Madison Square Garden. The former bantamweight champion is also open to fighting “Lord” in December, so the latter has plenty of time to heal and prepare.
“Even if it’s Fight Night, I don’t mind,” Sterling said on his YouTube channel. “Dec, run that shit. Run that shit. Run that shit. All I’m saying is I want to give him a fair chance to get better, be ready, be the best version of myself and I’d love that fight. I want to fight the fights that make the most sense; the biggest names and fights that will get me somewhere. Not just taking any fights, I’m not just going to tell this guy. I’m 37. It’s time to screw up or get off the pot.
Sterling also believes the timing works well for the division, especially if Volkanovski and Evloev are scheduled to clash in October.
“So, in my personal opinion, it makes the most sense to let us figure it out and see who wins,” Sterling added. “We’re both busy, staying active and getting the clear No. 1 contender for the title. I know they had the ‘Beware of the Dog’ signs, but I’ve got something for that. I like to think my style is the ultimate equalizer. Just like they talk about power, I’ve got something else.”
Sterling is about to win Brian Ortega and Youssef Zalal. He’s now 3-1 since moving up to featherweight, coming off a 45-pound loss in Fight of the Night against Evloev in 2024.
