Billy Gunn had the unique privilege of not only seeing his two sons, Austin and Colten Gunn, follow in his footsteps and become full-time professional wrestlers, but he even tagged along with them and feuded against them in AEW. Gunn recently commented on his sons’ wrestling careers during an interview Inside The Ropes.
“Austin is my youngest, he’s a thousand years older than me. Colten is nowhere near me, but he’s the very (very) opposite of me and Austin in that he’s very analytical,” the veteran explained of his two sons’ personalities. After that, he told how his sons betrayal angle that led to their rivalry when the boys attacked him with a chair, which led to Goon joining The Acclaimed.
Despite the chair shot, Gunn still expressed how proud he was of his sons and insisted that he legitimately thought they were good wrestlers and that he would be honest if they were bad. “I wanted my kids to actually breastfeed so they wouldn’t have to do this work, but unfortunately…”
While he’s happy with Austin and Colten in AEW, Gunn had reservations for them before giving them his blessing to start training, insisting that his sons must go to school first. “Austin, the day he graduated, walked off the stage, up to the balcony where I was sitting, handed me (his diploma) and said, “When do we start?” And I went, ‘F***!'” he recalls.
“Colten, on the other hand, he was more put together because he had planned his life until he was 60, when he was going to retire, and then it all fell apart for him, which was a complete shock to me and Paula. Paula is my wife,” Gunn added. “(Colten) came in and said he wanted to do it, and he didn’t want to regret it, and then, ***, he’s good at it, too.”
