Brett Cameron has signed a one-year deal to stay at the club Hurricanes for their title defense campaign in 2027 as he looks to return to action after two serious knee injuries.
Playmaker, who played one Test for All black people in 2018, he has played just 223 minutes of Super Rugby over the past two seasons due to injury, watching from the sidelines as the Hurricanes ended their decade-long title drought in June.
Still, the 30-year-old is no stranger to silverware, with two Super Rugby titles to his credit Super Rugby Aotearoa titles from his time in Crusaders before spending the spell Japan with Kamaishi Seawaves.
The last time he was healthy, Cameron was the one Wellington club starting number 10 and an All Blacks XV choice. For now, though, he says he just wants to get back on the field with his teammates.
“I couldn’t be happier to be back with the Hurricanes for another year,” Cameron said. “I am very grateful for this opportunity and the support of the coach and the club after several difficult years for me with injuries.
“I’ve been at home with this team since I started in 2023. It’s a special group to be a part of and I’m working harder than ever to come back ready for the 2027 season.”
Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw called Cameron a “real inspiration” for the way he overcame his injuries and continued to contribute to the environment.
“We’re just delighted to have him here. He’s obviously had a very tough year with two serious knee injuries, but he’s been a real inspiration in terms of the way he’s dealt with both of those injuries,” Laidlaw said.
“Especially the second injury, which he suffered in the first game of the year and started a long rehab process while we were playing. His ability to come in every day, continue to rehab and contribute to the team has been amazing.”
“We’re really proud of him for being able to deal with it because it wasn’t easy. We just hope his body allows him to play the rugby we know he can. We honestly feel he’s still got growth in his game and ability to play super rugby, which in our eyes hasn’t diminished.”
“Adding him alongside Reuben, Harry and Callum keeps us super strong in the front five and back between the four. We’re looking forward to BC going into pre-season and continuing the really good progress they’re making. We’re all hoping he’ll be ready for the start of the season.”
