SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Hockey League Scott Howson announced that the AHL Board of Governors has approved a number of changes AHL Rule 37 (Video) and: AHL Rule 38 (Coach’s Challenge)will come into force from the upcoming 2026-27 season.
- Starting this season, the video review process will be expanded to include opinions on potential offside fouls on goal-scoring plays. Out-of-game checks should begin with a coach’s challenge.
- A team’s first failed coach’s challenge will result in a minor penalty to the bench for delay of game. Subsequent missed challenges will result in double minor penalties in the same match. Previously, failed challenges only resulted in the loss of a team timeout.
- Video review can now be used to score a goal when the puck enters the net during continuous play, unaffected by the referee’s whistle after a forfeit.
The American Hockey League is entering the second year of a multi-year partnership spideo. Spiideo’s automatic capture system provides AHL officials with high-definition, multi-angle views of the entire ice surface in all 32 arenas, along with improved controls that help streamline the video review process. Reviews are conducted by AHL on-ice officials from the scorer’s chart.
Spiideo’s video resources are also available for use by the League’s Player Safety Committee during discipline reviews.
