Cavaliers executive Brandon Weems is getting a promotion, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who reports (via Twitter) that Weems will be promoted from assistant general manager to general manager.
Coby Altman is president of basketball operations in Cleveland and Mike Gansey served as the Cavaliers’ general manager until he left the organization to run the Sixers’ front office earlier this offseason. Weems’ new title indicates that he will take Gansey’s place as Altman’s senior lieutenant and the No. 2 person in basketball operations.
Weems was the assistant director of basketball operations John Calipari at Kentucky from 2009-12, then served as an assistant on the staff at Drexel in 2012-13 and as an assistant coach at Oakland University in Michigan from 2013-15.
Weems joined the Cavaliers as a scout in 2015 and rose steadily through the ranks over the next decade, serving as the team’s director of scouting from 2017-21, senior director of player personnel from 2021-22 and assistant general manager from 2022.
Weems’ name was in the news for a bit in July when the agent Rich Pavel singled him out as the reason why the cavaliers turned to LeBron James in free agency. Weems and James old friends — Paul called him “basically LeBron’s brother” — though the four-time MVP ultimately turned down the opportunity to return to Cleveland to join Gansey in Philadelphia.
