The NBA G League held its 2026/27 draft on Saturday afternoon. Players who signed NBAGL contracts and whose rights were not yet under team control were part of the draft pool.
texas legends, MavericksThe affiliate team took the No. 1 overall pick in Saturday’s draft and used it to select a former NBA lottery pick Jeremy Sochan.
According to Michael Scott of HoopsHype (Link to Twitter), Sochan plans to join the Legends this fall to try to make an NBA comeback. The 23-year-old forward was refused Portland last week after he spent training camp and the preseason on an Exhibit 9 contract with the Trail Blazers.
Bringing Sochan to Texas won’t stop another NBA team from drafting him, as holding a player’s rights in the G League doesn’t mean you control his NBA rights. But it will give the Mavericks a chance to get a first-hand look at him before determining whether they want to sign him to a standard contract — Sochan is no longer eligible for a two-way deal as he is four years into the NBA.
Sochan was selected ninth overall in the 2022 NBA draft and spent his first three and a half years with the Spurs. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged at least 11 points per game in each of his first three seasons as San Antonio experimented with his role, using him as a point guard or center for long stretches.
However, Sochan fell out of the regular rotation during the fourth year of the 2025/26 season and was released at the trade deadline, allowing him to sign with the Knicks. He didn’t play much in New York either, averaging just 6.9 minutes per game in 16 regular season games and 3.3 mpg in eight postseason games, but he won his first NBA title when his new team beat his old team in the NBA Finals.
In a total of 228 regular season games, Sochan averaged 9.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest, shooting .470/.286/.725.
As Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.ca tweetsthe top pick has changed hands four times before the draft, and there have been a total of 77 trades involving 31 first-round picks through Saturday.
