Utah State Bank Championship Round 3 tee times: What to know
Jackson Koivunby all accounts, play pro golf for a long time, make all kinds of money and win a bunch of tournaments.
But on Friday, during the second round of the Utah Bank Championship, the 21-year-old prodigy was just struggling. It was coming off last weekend’s highs Presidents’ Cup. He admitted he was exhausted. He needed a run to make the cut.
So he showed why he could play pro golf for a long time, make all kinds of money and win a bunch of tournaments.
“Standing on 9 tees with 10 holes to go,” Koivun said, “I just told myself if I can make four or five birdies, I’ll be fine.”
He made five, and he needed them all. His last, on his last hole of the day, the par-5 18th, was special, even if his lie for his second shot was not; it nestled against the rake lines in the left fairway bunker. Would it be safe to play? Would you go for the green? The last ones. “I was like, I’m going for broke here,” he said. He did, hit it right on the green, and from there, dropped a 5-footer to advance to the weekend.
“I’m the type of person that if I go out to a tournament, I come here and I want to win,” Koivun said. “So at the end of the day I was fighting hard to make that cut and just happy to say I did it and have the chance this weekend to hopefully put up two good numbers.”
