Not sure why I expected more from Cody Rhodes’ sit down interview with Michael Cole tonight. Maybe it’s because bully Ray convinced me exactly what this is needed to get Rhodes back on track and again the fans behind him. Maybe it’s because I was half expecting Orton to come out of nowhere and have a big, exciting backstage brawl or something. Whatever I expected, this was not it and it was really, really flat.
Cole began with more of a thought than a question, saying it was becoming a pattern that Rhodes couldn’t “pull the trigger” on someone he cared about. Rhodes said he’s not going to make any excuses and that he’s proud to be “QB1” and even though he doesn’t have the same team behind him as he did at WrestleMania 40, WWE is a big place with a lot of other teammates.
Rhodes admitted a lot of things in this promo that really didn’t do anything for me, like saying that he should have realized that everyone was going to stab him in the back because of the territory of being champion. The main part of this was Rhodes saying it’s ridiculous that everyone is discussing his morals and he doesn’t need to go down a “darker path” because he’s come this far being the same guy he’s been since his WrestleMania 38 return.
He said, however, that he will do what he has to do against Orton and won’t make the same mistake he made by not hitting Orton in the head in Sunday Night’s Main Event. It was a lot of talk, which Rhodes is certainly good at, but I didn’t believe him. We’ve all seen Rhodes shot a lot more than this, so it didn’t land as well as it should have.
WWE then went one step further (to annoy me personally). releasing a social media clip after SmackDown, where Rhodes told Cole as the cameras cut that he was “going to kick Orton’s f***ing head”. Cole mentioned on commentary so I thought this was coming, but I’m so sick of WWE running storylines on X instead of TV.
Nothing about this did anything for me tonight, from the apparent confirmation that Rhodes isn’t turning around anytime soon, to the sneaky shots that were put in afterwards where he hasn’t been shot or threatened or anything really. I assume they’ll have another match at Money in the Bank, so there’s a few more weeks to build, and hopefully they’re a lot hotter than this.
