WWE quietly relinquished Chelsea Green’s WWE Women’s Championship “interim,” which was the right thing to do, and probably the right way to do it, and tonight she made her first title defense against Nia Jax. It was another match tonight that was a little rough and the finish certainly wasn’t the cleanest, but it was about what I’d expect from Green’s title win and I didn’t mind. I loved that he got in the ring to defend the title against Jax, especially in front of a super hot crowd that absolutely loved him.
Jax also cut a really good promo backstage before the match where he said that while he usually makes a career of breaking faces, he’s going to finish off Green when he breaks his own. I liked the callback and it worked well with the fact that Green is still working through an orbital bone injury and had to wear a blinded face mask to wrestle.
“Irresistible Force” dominated for a good part of the match, which is what I expected. However, Green looked hopeless as he had some good hopes and took Jax’s brutal offense well. Jax tossed him over the commentary table and sent him somersaulting right onto his back onto the ring apron as Green kept coming up for more.
Lash Legend and Tiffany Stratton were factors at ringside, but only for one spot, which was fine. Jax pulled Green off the face mask and sent him to the outside only for Legend to nail him with a big right hand, which Stratton took instead after pushing Green out of the way. That, of course, can always be used as ammunition when Stratton inevitably turns on the champion.
Green took out Legend, dodged the Destroyer and put his mask back on, a doctor’s request, and took Jax to the ropes on Ugly. The place wasn’t clean at all, but I could see the vision because I don’t think there was a better way for Green to try to move on a bigger Jax. I hope Greene and Jax don’t run into each other anytime soon, and I hope we get Greene vs. Stratton soon.
It wasn’t the prettiest matchup so far, but Mexico City was the right place to protect Green. Hopefully, Green is on his way to a full recovery and he can start a more meaningful feud with someone he can match up with better. Although I may sound harsh, I loved this because we got Green’s official reign tonight with this defense.
