While I enjoyed Julia and Blake Monroe’s street fight on SmackDown on Friday, I absolutely loved Bayley and Lyra Valkyria’s No Disqualification match tonight. These women crushed each other, with Valkyrie taking the brunt of it, and they had one of the best women’s matches in recent memory in WWE.
I’m usually someone who complains about feuds going on too long, and while this has to be one of those complaints since they’re fighting in July before Saturday Night’s Main Event, it never really got old for me. Bayley not being there for a while after Valkyrie beat her up after their SNME match certainly helped, and this wild match put a nice bow on things. This was exactly the type these women were supposed to have.
This match got all the time it deserved, which was fantastic. It was full of numerous weapon points and large points associated with those weapons, many of which were accompanied by an audible “AH! out of me and it never slowed down.
I thought Bailey looked the strongest during this one, although Valkyrie certainly didn’t look weak, and some of the spots she took were pretty wild, suffering through them and just keeping going. Valkyrie hit some big moves as well, including a big dropkick that hit the back of Bayley’s head into the steps, and she also had a great counter where she picked up a chair to protect herself from Bayley’s elbow drop.
The table spots in the match were great as well, the first where Bayley sent them both through one device by diving against the commentary desk, and the second where she sent Valkyrie through the other with an elbow drop that ended the match. Bayley brought Valkyrie back into the ring and had her hit a crossface, which she applied a kendo stick to Valkyrie’s face, keeping things brutal until the end.
As I’m sure it will be speculated online, this could be Bayley’s last match in WWE. His contract situation has been the subject of reports for months. I don’t know what to think of that because it seems very unlikely for him to go through if it really is his last fight with the company. But if that’s the case, I personally don’t mind her getting the win because I think it makes sense with Valkyrie’s laid-back character.
