Wallabies coach Les Kiss has explained the selection of Toby Macpherson in his 34-man squad for the Bledisloe Cup Series, with former Australia The U20 captain fills the vacant position Exeter Chiefs forward Tom Hooper.
Macpherson made his ACT debut Brumbies at Super Rugby Pacific level in mid-February, which was the first in a series of appearances from the bench. But the 22-year-old would also earn starts in the second row and at loss at forward.
It was a breakthrough campaign for the forward, who marked his first start with a brace away from home Fijian Drua in the fifth round. Macpherson made 13 appearances last season and later captained the Brumbies during the second edition of Super Rugby AUS.
The Wallabies bolter is one of two uncapped players selected by Kiss, the other being Harry McLaughlin-Phillips. Both are products of the Brisbane Boys’ College First XV and Australia U20 path, which led to this opportunity with the national team.
“Everyone in this country is on our radar. The Super AUS series was important for us, we can keep an eye on some guys and they get legs and that’s important,” Kiss told reporters when asked about Macpherson.
“Toby played well. We have some good options in that space and I think Toby’s big advantage is that he plays lock as well as six.
“With Tom Hooper’s department, it seemed like a logical way to bring someone like Toby in and give him that experience in the Wallaby camp.”
Kiss has named 19 forwards in the latest Wallabies squad, with Taniela Tupou and Hooper unavailable due to club commitments in the northern hemisphere. Charlie Cale has also been ruled out until the end of 2026, as reported on September 22.
In the free forwards, Harry Wilson will once again captain the side and will be joined in the back line by Fraser McReight and Rob Valletini against the Boks. Nick Champion de Crespigny is another contender, along with Western Force forward in the mix.
Jeremy Williams, Lukhan Salakaia-Lotto and Lachlan Shaw were selected as second-row options. Josh Canham has also been named despite missing the Springboks Test through injury, although Nick Frost has been included as injury cover.
“It’s great that (Macpherson) got the name. I thought he had a great Super season and he’s playing really well in the Super AUS,” Williams said.
“I don’t know him very well personally at all, but I’m very excited that he’s got the opportunity to come into the team and add value.”
