The All black people suffered some injuries ahead of the Bledisloe Cup series opener at Eden Park, but that opened the door for the “very important” 145-Test veteran to start against the Wallabies this weekend.

Ruben Love and Richie Mo’unga were both ruled out, prompting All Blacks coach Dave Rennie to move Damian McKenzie from fullback to the first five-eighth spot. Will Jordan will continue to be on the wing and Beauden Barrett will be brought into the starting side.

Barrett has made just one appearance for the All Blacks this season, playing nine minutes off the bench against the Springboks in Baltimore. in 2015 Rugby World Cup the winner made his last Test start during the 2025 Autumn Nations Series, wearing the number 10 jersey against England.

But Wallabies coach Les Kiss is in no doubt about the significant impact Barrett will have as he sits alongside brothers Scott and Jordie in the rush. “Where do I start,” Kiss said initially, after being asked about the offensive threats Barrett brings.

“Experience in those big games is important, isn’t it? Him and Damian, they know each other inside out basically in terms of how many times they’ve played together. Another Barrett (Jordie) inside, brother, and another one (Scott) up front, so there’s cohesion.

“Beaudy will be very important for them in many aspects, in terms of leadership and what I would say, the main batting option apart from Damian there, to be able to control the game from there.

“He will certainly be important to them.

“It’s a good team. I’m really happy with our team, how we prepared, I’m not knocking us, but I really understand that this is a good team and we’re going to have to be good on Saturday.”

The All Blacks are unbeaten in their last 53 Tests at the Garden, having beaten Ireland during July Nations Championship window. But there is a sense of belief among the Wallabies, who are currently on a six-match unbeaten run.

Kiss has selected a side that includes 625 Test experience in the First XV, and a further 111 Test caps among the players. Allan Alaalatoa and Rob Valetini are the most experienced forwards and the two backs have played at least 50 Wallabies matches.

Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii will remain on the wing, despite Hunter Paisami being unavailable this week due to suspension. Queensland Red Isaac Henry instead returns to the outside center rush, joining Len Ikitau in midfield.

“It’s not just another game. It’s definitely a big game,” Kiss said.

“Both countries, Bledisloe, it means a lot. It’s significant and therein lies the fact that they’ve named a couple of centurions and have a lot of captains in their team, that’s impressive.

“We’re going to have to be good, that’s for sure, to go out there and put something that can compete with that.”
