UEFA will have a candidate to challenge Infantino for FIFA presidency, says Denmark’s Moller

November 4: The Danish FA (DBU) has repeated its claim that UEFA will find a credible candidate to challenge FIFA boss Gianni Infantino in the election before November 18.

As the election deadline looms, UEFA is running out of time to field a candidate to oust Infantino, who has resisted pressure to resign over his abandoned plans to privatize the World Cup. However, DBU president Jesper Moller told Bold in an interview that “we have two more meetings scheduled for early November before we announce the opposing candidate. The candidate will be presented well before the November 18 deadline.”

With Concacaf chief Victor Montagliani and AFC president Shaikh Salman Ibrahim Al Khalifa not running for the presidency, UEFA’s options for finding a strong candidate appear limited. PSG president and Qatari power Nasser Al Khelaifi has also ruled out running for office. UEFA officials and European administrators have repeatedly said they will find a suitable candidate.

“The sitting president always has an advantage,” Moller said. “However, once we present our candidate, there will be four months left to campaign. A lot can happen during that time.”

Denmark was one of the few football associations not to support Infantino when he won re-election by acclamation at the FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda in 2023.

“I felt that Denmark was isolated during the 2023 elections because we were one of the few countries that did not support Infantino,” Moller said. “That will not be the case in the 2027 elections. I think at least 50 of the 55 (UEFA) member countries will vote against Infantino.”

Azerbaijan is one of the soccer associations that has broken European unity against the embattled Infantino, who has hit the campaign trail in recent weeks but has been hit by fresh scandals over FIFA paying its taxes in the United States and using its connections to US President Donald Trump to keep a Nicaraguan maid working for him after his government visa was revoked.
