Rybakina fills one gap in her Grand Slam record
This is his eighth Grand Slam quarter-final and first here at the eighth attempt, equaling his best finish at the US Open in the last 16 a year ago. It also completes the set with a quarterfinal finish or better in all four majors.
She did so without dropping a set, beating American Thea Frodin 6-3, 6-2, Spain’s Jessica Buzas Maneiro 6-2, 6-4 and Ukraine’s Yulia Starodubtseva 7-6 (6), 6-3. That makes her the fourth active player to reach the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slams without dropping a set along the way, after Venus Williams, Serena Williams and Aryna Sabalenka. He previously achieved this at Roland Garros in 2021 and 2024, Wimbledon in 2022 and the Australian Open in 2026.

The win was her 46th of the season, a total bettered by only Jessica Pegula on the WTA Tour this year. That leaves him with one win in the world No. 1 ranking, which will be guaranteed outright in the semi-finals. he can also achieve this through results elsewhere in the draw. Sabalenka, who has been leading the ranking since October 2024, must win the title to retain it.
Rybakina has been at a career-high No. 2 since March, and the season that got her there started with the Australian Open, where she defeated Sabalenka in the final to clinch her second major title after Wimbledon in 2022.
Osaka misses US Open fourth quarter-final
Osaka, the 2018 and 2020 champion here, was chasing a seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal and fourth in New York, a year after reaching the semifinals. She reached the last 16 by beating Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3), Czech Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 and Belgian 23rd seed Elise Mertens 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, her third fourth-round appearance of the season since Wimbledon.
It was a more difficult year against the top 10. She has won one of seven such matches in 2026, over Sabalenka at Wimbledon, to make it one of eight on Monday. Rybakina now leads their head-to-head 2-0 after winning 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the Toronto quarterfinals this summer.
Rybakina plays China’s Zheng Qingwen in the quarter-finals, the Olympic champion having beaten Iga Sviatek 0-5 in the first set 7-5, 6-3 earlier on Monday.
