She plays Karen Khachanov on Friday, and expects flatness from the backcourt. “Whoever dominates from the baseline and is more aggressive will probably do better because our games are pretty similar. We’re two pretty tall guys trying to dominate from the baseline. So whoever can do it better, I think, will win.”
The other semi-final is between two Americans, Ben Shelton and Francis Tiafoe.
The quarterfinals were decided on serve. Zverev hit 71% of his first serves and won 77% of the points behind them, hitting eight aces and 22 winners. Van de Zandshulp landed 53% of her first serves and won 69% of those points and 38% of the rest, leaving her on the defensive for much of the evening against an opponent of her size and reach.
He was also tired for two days. he defeated lucky loser Arthur Gea of France 3-6, 6-7, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3), 6-4 on Monday in 5 hours and 13 minutes, the fourth-longest match in US Open history, having already gone five sets against Belgium’s Zizou (6, 37, 37 sets). 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
He saw off Australian No. 6 Alex de Minaur 6-4, 7-5, 6-2, after England’s Ian Choinski 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
