Slavia Prague vs Arsenal Champions League Preview

Arsenal’s week has been a strange mix of the sublime and the ridiculous. A shock EFL Cup exit at League Two Fleetwood was followed by a 1-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday, and Mikel Arteta’s side now head to Prague on Wednesday night looking to keep their Champions League campaign on track against a Slavia side still chasing a first win in Europe.

The Gunners are seventh in the league table with seven points, following a 1-0 win at Napoli, a 3-0 home win over Lille and a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich. They have been very difficult to break down, conceding just twice in three games, and have conceded just nine goals in their last 18 Champions League games, keeping 11 clean sheets in that run.

Arsenal will also be motivated by the memory of last season’s final, when they lost on penalties to reigning champions PSG after a 1-1 draw.

Slavia have struggled very badly in Europe. The Czech champions are 32nd in the table with just one point from their first three games, conceding seven goals. They are now winless in their last 18 games in UEFA competition and have conceded at least twice in eight of their last nine Champions League home games.

At the national level, however, they want. Slavia are top of the Czech First League, seven points ahead of Mladá Boleslav, and have kept a clean sheet in the league. They will also be without 6ft 7in forward Tomáš Chorý, who has been left out of the squad by his manager.

Arsenal are unbeaten in four previous meetings between the clubs. They defeated Slavia 7-0 in the 2007-08 Champions League before a 0-0 draw in Prague, and there they won 4-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2020-21 Europa League after a 1-1 draw at the Emirates.

Team News Slavia Prague v Arsenal

Arsenal are still without Bukayo Saka and William Saliba. Eberechi Eze is a doubt after Arteta revealed he had a problem ahead of the Liverpool game.

Max Dowman’s suspension does not affect this game, as his red card came in the EFL Cup, and Arteta is expected to return for visiting Hull City on Saturday.

Slavia are missing four first-team regulars through injury or suspension, as well as Chorý. Defender David Zima is expected to start, and young Nigerian David Moses will be one of their main attacking threats.
