Sean O’Malley Criticizes Daniel Cormier’s UFC 333 Question About Petr Yan Facing Song Yadong
Yan defended his bantamweight title Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Cormier then asked Yan if he wanted to fight Song next. O’Malley wins over Yan and Song, so he chides Cormier for proposing a fight between the Russian and the Chinese.
O’Malley (20-3) was taken aback by Cormier’s question. The former champion outpointed Song when he won by unanimous decision last January. He also defeated Yan in 2022 via a controversial split decision. O’Malley is confident he deserves his next title shot against Yan.
“DC, I don’t know what he’s thinking,” O’Malley said on his YouTube channel. “He asks about Song Yadong. I’m trying to wrap my head around it. Maybe he’s next, wait, I beat him like 6 months ago. I’ll fight Petr Yan next; I don’t care. Even if they announce Petr vs. Song, I’ll fight Petr next… It’s going to be the biggest, biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history.”
Yan (21-5) said he is ready to fight “Song, King Kong or whoever” next. While Yan also believes Song deserves the next title shot more than O’Malley, he leaves the decision up to UFC matchmakers.
