Real Madrid they hope to stay within striking distance of Barcelona ahead of next week’s Clásico when they meet Seville this evening
Barca were convincing winners at Real Betis last night and Madrid cannot afford any mistakes.
Madrid bounced back from a 2-1 derby defeat against Atlético with a 1-0 win at Villarreal last weekend, and have been very strong at the Bernabeu, winning their last four league games at home. They also bounced back to claim a dramatic 4-3 win at Roma in midweek.
They will have to do it without Vinícius Júnior, however. The Brazilian was sent off against Villarreal for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair and has been banned for four matches. Madrid’s appeal has been dismissed, so the Clásico will also be lost.
Sevilla have been one of the surprise packages of the season so far. Luis García Plaza’s side are fifth with 14 points from eight games, just four behind Madrid, which is a big improvement on the 2024-25 campaign, when they finished 17th and narrowly avoided relegation. They have also had a full week to prepare, having not played since the 3-3 draw at Levante on Monday night.
History, however, is very much against them. Sevilla are on a 15-game winless streak against Madrid in all competitions, losing 13 of those, and have lost their last five games in a row. Their last league win at the Bernabéu was in December 2008.
