Real Madrid achieved a fourth straight win in all competitions as they beat RB Leipzig 4-1 to ensure they go into Sunday’s Clasico on a high, with Yan Diomande in goal against his former club.
Madrid face arch-rivals Barcelona at the Camp Nou this weekend in desperate need of a win to reduce their six-point gap on the reigning LaLiga champions at the top of the table.
While Barça will enter this match after an exciting 4-2 defeat Champions League Paris Saint-Germain holders Madrid went through a tough test in routine fashion to make it three wins from three in the league stage.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring from the byline with his first goal for Madrid since joining from Manchester City, and there was no way back for Leipzig after Arda Guler scored his second goal in two games.
Kylian Mbappe headed into the far corner to make it 3-0 before Tidiam Gomis replied with a consolation for Leipzig, although substitute Diomande had the final say.
Diomedes produced a brilliant volley against the club he left this summer in a deal worth up to €140m, giving the score an emphatic appearance that didn’t seem likely in the early stages.
Madrid gets a perfect preparation for the Clásico
Leipzig found plenty of joy going forward, with Thibaut Courtois forced into a fine save to keep out Romulo Cardoso’s superb effort on the turn.
Vinicius Junior saw a curling effort saved by Maarten Vandevoordt, whose goal was later cleared by a frustrated Jude Bellingham as Madrid tried to break Leipzig’s resistance.
Courtois again rescued Madrid after Christopher Nkunku had played in goal, and Leipzig were punished for not taking their chances to open the scoring when Silva went off the mark for the Whites.
He reacted quicker after Vandevoordt failed to adequately deal with Guler’s low blow. The keeper made contact with the shot, but only managed to pick up the pace as it squirmed between his legs, with Silva on hand to touch down.
Vinicius was denied for a second time by Vandevoordt but the Belgian could do nothing seven minutes into the second half as Mbappe headed Bellingham’s deep cross across goal for Guler to head home.
Mbappé missed the chance to make it 3-0 when he fired uncharacteristically into the side netting but, as the game looked to be winding down, he made up for that miss with a superb curling strike from the edge of the box.
Gomis pounced on Madrid’s poor defending as he slotted home after linking up well with Christoph Baumgartner to give Leipzig something to cheer on, but Diomande restored the three-goal cushion when he produced a stunning illustration of why Los Blancos paid such a big fee to prize him from the Bundesliga, meeting Brahim Diaz’s volley.
