Third-year guard Jamal Shedd reached an agreement with Art Predators on a veteran contract extension that will keep him through the 2029/30 season, agent KJ Smith ESPN’s Shams Charania reports (Link to Twitter).
According to Charanya, Shedd is signing a three-year, $24 million deal that will take effect next July. The 24-year-old will make roughly $2.3 million in 2026/27, the final season of the three-year contract he signed after being selected 45th overall in the 2024 draft.
A former star with the Houston Cougars, Shead became a regular part of Toronto’s rotation in his first two NBA seasons, appearing in 157 of 164 regular season games for the team and averaging 6.9 points, 4.8 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 21.1 minutes per night. Like Charania tweetshis 354 assists off the bench last season were a league high and also the best single-season mark in team history for a bench player.
In the early stages of his NBA career, Shead struggled to shoot, making just 38.6% of his attempts from the floor, including 32.2% from beyond the three-point line. Still, the organization values the 6-foot-1 guard for his ball-handling, playmaking and defensive tenacity, which has drawn him comparisons to some former Raptors point guards, including Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet.
Let’s assume the Raptors used their teams Colin Murray-Boyles and I’m Kobe Walterwhich is a safe bet they will have almost $178 million in guaranteed money on their books for just seven players in 2027/28. Shed’s new deal will push that number north of $185 million, as the three-year, $24 million contract calls for a starting salary of at least $7.4 million.
NBA the last projection carries a cap hit of $176M and a luxury tax of $213M in 2027/28, so there’s still plenty of room for Toronto to operate below the projected tax threshold. However, the $185 million in guaranteed money the club has committed so far does not include the forward’s new deal Arjay Barrettwho is currently in a contract year.
