No player had ever qualified for the postseason after starting the year as low as Jodar, who was ranked 168th in January. The previous record was held by Argentina’s Mariano Puerta at No. 133 in early 2005, ahead of Arthur Ashe (No. 130 in 1978), Goran Ivanisevic (No. 129 in 2001) and Andre Agassi (No. 110 in 1998). The Spaniard is also the first man to reach an ATP Finals in the same year as his tour-level debut.
The eight qualifiers are Alexander Zverev, Alcaraz, Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli, Arthur sonTiafoe and Jodar. Jannik Siner, who is second in the race, is out for the season.

PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, points from January 1, after Friday’s quarter-finals, ATP media notes and points from each round. Sinner is out for the season, so the top nine, excluding him, qualify.
Fritz and Paul both fall in the quarterfinals in Paris
Fritz, who beat the Phils 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday, needed to reach the semifinals to get past Jodar. He won the first set in a tiebreak 12-10 and held two match points, but Alcaraz came back to win in two hours and 45 minutes.
Paul needed the final to get past Jodar. Shelton hit 19 aces to beat him and advance to his first semi-final in Paris, where he will face the Frenchman. Luca Van Assche.
Fritz finishes the race in 11th place with 3050 points, and Paul in 13th place with 2925 points.
How Tiafoe and Jodar took the bottom two spots
Tiafoe, ranked eighth with 3,390 points, lost to Quentin Hallis in the second round after holding four points. He could only miss Turin if Paul won the title by beating Fritz in the final, and Shelton’s win ended that chance.
Jodar needed both Americans to lose before the semifinals. He had already survived on Wednesday when Alex de Minaur, who would have passed him by one win, lost 7-6 (2), 6-3 to Thomas Martin Etcheverry.
Stockholm will not change anything, but there will be two substitutes in Turin
The Stockholm Open (Nov. 8-14), the last ATP event before Turin, cannot change the order. As the ATP expected ahead of Friday’s quarter-finals, losses to Paul and Fritz rounded out the field, although Fritz is the top seed in Stockholm.
The 10th and 11th players in the race, de Minaur and Fritz, will replace Tour. They will only play if one of the eight qualifiers is eliminated before or during the tournament.
Both played in Turin last year. De Minaur defeated Fritz 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the group stage and advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to Sinner 7-5, 6-2. Fritz, a 2024 finalist, made it through the round robin.
A withdrawal cannot be ruled out. Koboli did not play a single match in Paris, where he left with a left leg injury. Fils did play in Paris, but a week ago he retired in the quarterfinals against Fritz in Basel. There is still no guarantee that either will be on the court in Turin.
