Quenton Nelson traded to Seahawks in move that could shake up the NFC West

Colts trade eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quinton Nelson to Seattle Seahawks 3rd round pick in 2027, and 5th round pick in 2028 In a move that could signal the start of a fire sale in Indianapolis.

Nelson, the lifeblood of the Colts offensive line since being drafted No. 6 in the 2018 NFL Draft, has been excellent this season, but GM Chris Ballard is on the organization to begin the process of preparing for the future after he was fired following the team’s loss to the Titans. Nelson wasn’t likely to be on a rebuilding team, and Indianapolis decided to get something while he was in the final year of his contract.

As the Colts continue to sink, this trade is a big deal that makes an NFC team stronger. Let’s rate both sides.

Grade for the Seattle Seahawks: A+

It’s not usually possible to find a great offensive lineman to completely overhaul an offense midway through the season, but here we are. Getting a 3rd or 5th round pick on a contract for an aging player may seem like overpaying on paper, but teams are becoming the most sought-after assets in the NFL by hiring more flashy linebackers out of the box and tight ends. The guard and center positions have become more valuable than the offensive tackles, a reversal of traditional logic — and up to this point, Seattle has lacked an elite presence in the middle of the line.

Simply put: Nelson is a top-3 guard in all of football, gifted in both opening holes in the run game (as he did for Jonathan Taylor) and immovable in the game to defend against those interior blitzes. Additionally, this gives the Seahawks time to trade Nelson by signing him to a contract extension.

In terms of compensation, it’s really a drop in the bucket. Seattle is set to receive five compensatory picks in the 2027 draft, one in the fourth round for Kenneth Walker III and three in the fifth round. The Seahawks also receive a third-round compensatory pick for the loss of Nolan Tesley, a member of the Minnesota Vikings’ front office.

Seattle wants to win now. They believe the door is open to winning another Super Bowl, and they are full of confidence following their win over the Chiefs. Getting a point guard of Nelson’s caliber checks all the boxes of what it takes to reach another level.

Grade for the Indianapolis Colts: B

This was a great return for a player who could not be re-signed by Indianapolis next season. The curious part of this deal, and why the Colts don’t draft him higher, is the lack of performance enhancements associated with Nelson, which could push him into one of those picks depending on the outcome.

Nelson has so much depth that the Colts feel like they could have gotten more out of him, but it seems like they took his quick gift. It’s nice to have him back, but that has to be annoying when you’re losing a player of his caliber for two picks that could be at the end of each round.

The trade is a huge blow to the future of the Poles. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Colts have yet to finalize a deal, possibly indicating the team is ready to gut everything and rebuild completely. It’s the right move for a franchise that’s been scratching its head at mediocrity for the past few years without seeing any postseason success, meaning Nelson is the first domino to fall.
