Next Tour up-and-comer inches toward breakthrough victory | News

When it comes to the story of Ben James, the PGA Tour’s next breakout prospect, it’s probably best to just stick to the numbers.

He is 23 years old and best friends with Jackson Koivun, the last young buck to buck the entrance to the celebrity of the Tour. James has zero wins in 12 attempts, but four top-4s. Those finished came on the back of a capacity like microwave to heat in an instant. When he opened this week’s event in Mexico with a 65 and a 64, that marked 14 rounds of 65 or better in his young Tour career. In other words, at least one mega-low for every tournament.

His explanation for this is so basic that you will understand why we are attached to numbers.

“It’s difficult,” he said of many deep rounds, “but like I said, keep the left in the right places and keep the ball under the hole and give opportunities where you can be aggressive.”

On that note put: James is just a nick above average with the flatstick, but that’s the point. The best players on the PGA Tour are the elite with the long game and the ball first, then just hitting it well enough to get some heat with the putter. That’s what James’ game is all about. It rates in the 93rd percentile with the driver (in Tour), and in the 88th percentile with its irons. Importantly, there is no weakness.

Any golf sickos who followed the PGA Tour this fall wouldn’t be surprised to see his name at the top of the leaderboard World technology championship – It has been moving in this direction for some time. But there’s a particularly tantalizing array of opportunities at play here.

If James finishes on Sunday, he will not automatically earn an invitation to the Masters by virtue of the win, as many fall winners have done in the past. But he will earn enough world ranking points to jump into the top 50 in the world rankings for the first time in his career … precisely two months before the first top-50 cutoff for qualification at next year’s first major.

A victory would also reserve his ticket on the 2028 PGA Tour Championship Seriesa platform that seems destined, but a worthy checkpoint before 2027 even begins. All of this brings us to the most important number: that four-shot lead.

James will wake up on Sunday with, according to DataGolfa win expectancy of 73.7%. There are Tour winners who have trailed him, but the numbers are the numbers: James’ game is as good as any of them, and he has the cushion.
