Lionel Messi He was rested from Inter Miami after a hectic week of travel and was unable to avoid coming off the bench in the 2-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls.
Messi, 39, traveled to Oviedo in Spain Thursday to receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Sports Award.
He came on at the start of the second half with his team already ahead through ex-Manchester United Casemiro’s own goal.
And Swedish forward Emil Forsberg finished with the win in the final minute, which leaves Miami third and New York ninth in the Eastern Conference.
“That was something that was already agreed upon,” Miami coach Kily Gonzalez said.
“Obviously, it’s been through a lot of travel, time zone changes, temperature changes and a number of other factors.
“We were fully aware of all that and we agreed that this was the best approach to make sure he didn’t suffer any problems, specifically to avoid injury considering we have another game this Wednesday.
“The goal was for him to recover and get some minutes today, as always, he performed well.”
Messi is the top scorer MLS this season with 25 goals.
