Manchester United v Aston Villa Preview
Finally, Manchester United have a win to celebrate. Michael Carrick must now convert that into league points as his side host Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon in what could be his final game before a review of his position during the international break.
Tuesday’s 3-2 win against Roma was remarkable and completely out of step with their overall season. United were 2-0 down after 17 minutes and looked a beaten team at half-time, but Bruno Fernandes converted a second-attempt penalty after the break and Matheus Cunha scored two late goals, including the winner with five minutes remaining. It ended a nine game winless streak.
“When you look at (Roma’s) game, in the first half it wasn’t that bad,” Carrick said. “There were times there where we fell short.
“It’s the moments we have to clean up. Little moments here and there that have changed our games, which is football, something we have to manage – the first half against Chelsea was very good.
“I think we are showing signs of improvement in that regard. We have to move forward.
“Nothing has been done yet. Nothing has been accomplished yet. It’s a moment in time that we need to take advantage of to move forward. We need more, for sure.”
The Premier League remains the biggest problem. United are 17th, with just one league win in their first nine games, and lost 2-0 at Chelsea last weekend.
Villa arrive at Old Trafford in a less positive mood after their 3-0 defeat at Barcelona on Tuesday. Before that, they drew 1-1 with Fulham, two results that took some of the shine off their win against Manchester City.
Unai Emery will still have confidence. Their team has been excellent in Europe, has one of the most organized structures in the league and Nicolas Jackson has been in good form up front.
United won the corresponding fixture last season 3-1 in March.

Manchester United v Aston Villa team news
United have a long injury list. Carlos Baleba is out after picking up a hamstring injury against Roma, and Benjamin Šeško (shin), Manuel Ugarte (knee) and Luke Shaw are unavailable. Shaw is not expected to return until after the international break.
Lisandro Martínez is suspended after his red card at Chelsea. Marcus Rashford (hip) and Patrick Dorgu (hamstring) are doubts as they work to return to fitness.
Villa are still without former United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Amadou Onana and Matteo Ruggeri. Ian Maatsen is expected to continue at left back.

Prediction for Manchester United – Aston Villa
Yes, United did very well to come back against Roma in midweek, but you can’t ignore their league form, which is terrible. Emery will have Villa perfectly organized and we fancy the visitors to leave Old Trafford with the three points.
