Frank Lampard admitted it was a “difficult score” to contend with after his own Coventry side were hammered 5-0 to Brighton this afternoon.

The Sky Blues competed well for the first half hour but fell apart after Brighton scored through Charalampos Kostoulas and Malick Yalcouye either side of half-time.

Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for a terrible elbow on Maxim De Cuyper and the home side’s 10 men had no answers as Brighton hit back with a Pascal Gross penalty and long-range shots from Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari.

The defeat means Coventry are yet to pick up a point, or score a goal, in their four games since promotion.

Lampard told BBC Match of the Day: “It’s a tough scoreline and it’s not easy at home. The first half was quite good, we created some chances, better chances and had them under a lot of pressure. Then a mistake to make it 2-0 and the red card makes it very difficult.

“We have to take responsibility. We did some good things, then the game became very, very difficult for us. We have to keep working. At (Manchester) City last week we created some great chances and (Gianluigi) Donnarumma made some good saves. The Premier League pressure on these players is new. We have to keep working and hopefully when we start scoring, and this team we scored a lot of goals last season.

“I can’t complain to the players at the end.”

Hurzeler playing well after Brighton’s superb fourth place

The win moved Brighton up to fourth in the Premier League table, but boss Fabian Hurzeler wasn’t getting carried away.

He said: “It’s important to stay humble and not take these things for granted. We’re generally a team where a lot of players can score goals and that gives us a lot of flexibility which is also good for a manager.”

Dunk’s was the goal of the match, the former England centre-half smashing a stunning 25-yard effort into the top corner.

“I have that kind of shot in my locker and I only had one shot and it went into the top corner. I was shocked but it was lovely,” he told Sky Sports.

“We’ve shown fluidity and we have some quality up the pitch. If we keep scoring goals like this and keeping clean sheets, we’re going to have a great season.”
