Ken Johnson did everything a pitcher can do and still walked off a loser. On April 23, 1964, the Houston Colt .45s right-hander went all nine innings against the Cincinnati Reds without allowing a single hit. The only run of the game came in the ninth on two errors, and one of them was his own throwing error. Houston lost 1-0. More than 60 years later, he is still the only pitcher to lose a complete-game, nine-inning no-hitter. This is the most painful box score baseball has ever produced.
Pitchers like Andy Hawkins and Matt Young lost no-hit games too, but those were eight-inning road starts, so Johnson stands alone. Is this the unluckiest pitching performance in MLB history? Which team’s defense would you trust least with a no-hitter on the line today? Drop your biggest disagreement in the comments and let’s see which fanbase knows its baseball history.
