Volkov sarcastically credited the UFC for giving Hokit a title shot during an appearance on “The Ariel Helwani Show,” claiming the American’s “serious mental state” warranted a gold win.
“I want to be honest with you. I’m very supportive of this UFC fight,” Volkov told Ariel Helwani. “I have a lot of reasons why this fight should happen because Josh Hokit is known to be clearly dealing with some mental illness. So it’s very admirable for the UFC to put a guy with a serious mental condition in the title fight. Of course he should go in front of me. Guys who have that reason should fight first. It’s an incredibly inspiring story of the UFC being a very inspiring title with a mental illness. It’s a noble thing for the UFC to do with their mental issue.
Hokit responded by taking aim at Volkov’s recent results and fighting style, asking if he deserves a spot on the roster.
“Maybe he should get my ‘mental illness’ since he lost to the last two guys I beat,” Hokit wrote on X. “Has anyone ever watched a Volkov fight the whole way through? He’s lucky he’s still on the roster. Should have cut his boredom like when they cut (Jailton) Almeida.”
