Vikings legend Harrison Smith is back for a fifteenth season in Minnesota. Initial reports about the contract ($12.25 million base, up to $16.25 million maximum) were surprising to some.
An executive from another team was skeptical of the reported value, based on Smith’s performance in 2025 and the fact that he had been available to anyone, without players, throughout the offseason, training camp and preseason.
The contract does carry a base package of $12.25 million, technically. Here’s the breakdown:
1. Signing bonus: $6.95 million.
2. 2026 base salary: $1.3 million.
3. 2026 active roster bonus per game: $235,294 per game ($4 million total).
The $4 million in incentives is based on $1 million for earning a playoff spot (wild-card or bye), $1.5 million for winning the divisional round, $2 million for winning the NFC Championship or $4 million for winning the Super Bowl.
Basically, if the Vikings end up paying Smith $16.25 million, it will be the best money the franchise has ever spent.
The very high per-game roster bonuses reduce Smith’s guarantee to $8.25 million. If he plays the entire year, he gets $12.25 million.
Smith probably has more value to the Vikings than he would to a young team. As one source put it, Smith is a “sticky guy” whose presence makes Minnesota’s defense and the rest of the team better.
As for his late availability, we’re told that when other teams inquired about him, Smith made it clear that he would not be attending training camp. Which made a return to Minnesota even more likely, if he decided to play for another season.
It may have been inevitable. Either way, Smith returns for one more run with the team that made him a first-round pick in 2012.
The defense is good enough to compete and fight. If the offense carries its weight, they could make the playoffs and win their first postseason game since 2019.
