The expected confrontation between the WBC lightweight champion, Ryan Garciaand WBA Super Lightweight Champion, Teofimo Lopezis in advanced talks to take place in the first quarter of 2027, according to the report Mike Coppinger of the Ring.
Garcia won with a spectacular second round knockout over Zuffa Boxing Conor Benn just last month (see it here), which was his first title defense since winning the belt with an impressive victory Mario Barrios earlier this year.
Shortly after the fight, Garcia called for a show of Lopez, who sat ringside and watched “King Ry” paint his masterpiece. This prompted Lopez to attempt to enter the ring, in what we can only assume was a friendly, standard staredown, only to be intercepted by security. making a bit of a fuss.
As for Lopez, he bounced back from his loss to Shakur Stevenson — who is now a Zuffa Boxing fighter — with an impressive performance and victory Roland Romero two months ago. With the win, Lopez captured the WBO super-featherweight title and improved his overall record to an impressive 23-2.
This is a great matchup between two young fighters looking to improve their stock in the boxing world. some greats have retired (Terence Crawford) or seem at the end of his career (Canelo Alvarez). The winner takes a big step forward to become the face of boxing and sets himself up for a nice payday in his next outing, perhaps Devin Haney or the aforementioned Shakur Stevenson.
