33 France internationals have been named to benefit from a new initiative designed to reduce their playing time during the club season, prevent exhaustion and keep them in peak condition for the upcoming World Cup.
French outlet Midi Olympique published the list on Sunday, but the players and clubs concerned were already aware of the initiative, having been notified in advance by the Française de Rugby and the Ligue Nationale de Rugby.
The new program forces players to rest one weekend for every four-weekend block, or two games in an eight-weekend block, to avoid being overworked during the season.
At the same time, those involved cannot play more than nine test matches per season. This means that in Les Bleus’ current 11-match competitive schedule, players such as Matthieu Jalibert and Emmanuel Meafou will have to sit out two matches, either in November Nations Championship or in the Six Nations in 2027.
However, the French coaching staff and clubs could mutually adjust each player’s rest and competition schedule.
Stade Toulousein is the most represented club on the list with 13 players, followed by Union Bordeaux-Bègles (6), Stade Rochelais, Section Paloise and RC Toulon (3 each), Racing 92 (2), and ASM Clermont, LOU and Montpellier (one each).
Among the most notable omissions are Maxime Lucu from UBB, Grégory Alldritt from La Rochelle and Hugo Auradou from Section Paloise. However, it is important to note that the 33-man list for the new program was drawn up in the weeks leading up to the Six Nations.
As a result, players who were unavailable at the time, such as veteran scrum-half Lucu, who missed the tournament through injury, may not have been fully considered for selection. Therefore, he could still be included in the workload management program, with the same scenario applying to Hugo Auradou.
As for Alldritt, the situation with the number 8 differs from the other two, as his absence is a result of Fabien Galthié’s selection policy rather than an injury concern.
Gaël Fickou and Romain Taofifinua also appear on the official list, but both last played for France in November 2025, showing that there is room for change in the months ahead.
Despite some uncertainty surrounding potential additions or delisting over the next 12 months, LNR chairman Yann Roubert has clarified that the inclusion of these 33 players does not guarantee their participation at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
What is certain is that the FFR and LNR are committed to working together to give Les Bleus the best possible chance of achieving a historic result at the 2027 World Cup.
